Your health should always be the priority, and if you’re considering taking abortion pill drugs for your unplanned pregnancy, you should determine your eligibility. Assessing whether you can take these drugs and understanding their risks and side effects will help you make an informed decision.

La Luz Women’s Center cares about your well-being. We provide no-cost, confidential pre-abortion screenings to help you confirm essential details and make a confident decision.

How Abortion Pill Drugs Work

The abortion pill (also called medical abortion) consists of two drugs. Mifepristone, the first drug, blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary for the pregnancy’s growth and development. Your uterine lining will thin, and the pregnancy will end.

The second drug, misoprostol, causes your uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy and related tissues from your body.

With the abortion pill, you’ll always experience abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding. Your eligibility for this type of abortion depends on multiple factors, including your gestational age.

Eligibility Factors

The FDA has approved abortion pill drugs through 10 weeks gestation. This means that if your pregnancy is further along, you should not take these drugs as they can pose health risks.

You should also speak with a healthcare provider before choosing the abortion pill for your pregnancy. The following factors may make you ineligible:

  • Have an intrauterine device (IUD) currently in place
  • Have a suspected ectopic pregnancy
  • Have certain medical conditions (i.e., bleeding disorders, certain heart or blood vessel diseases, severe liver, kidney, or lung disease, or an uncontrolled seizure disorder)
  • Take a blood thinner or specific steroid medicines
  • Can’t make follow-up visits to your provider or don’t have access to emergency care
  • Have an allergy to the drugs used
