It is vital to get the facts when facing an unplanned pregnancy. This time can be even more stressful and challenging if you don’t receive the correct information.

Knowing your state’s abortion laws and available options are crucial steps to take. Separating fact from fiction will help you make an informed decision and promote peace of mind.

New Mexico’s Abortion Laws

In New Mexico, abortion is legal throughout all stages of pregnancy. You won’t be denied an abortion during an emergency or if you need lifesaving medical care.

You must consent to an abortion procedure; no one can pressure you to make a specific pregnancy decision.

Does an Abortion Treat Miscarriage or Ectopic Pregnancy?

You may have heard that pregnant women will be denied life saving medical treatment for certain conditions. This is untrue; if you are experiencing a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, you will still receive needed care.

Miscarriage

Miscarriage occurs in up to 26% of all pregnancies, making it more common than you may think. Pregnancy tissue may pass naturally during a miscarriage, but at other times, you might need a procedure like dilation and curettage (D & C) to remove the remaining tissue.

Needing medical treatment for this constitution is not equivalent to abortion. The embryo or fetus has already passed away, and you need care to ensure no pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus. Abortion terminates an existing, viable pregnancy.

Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants in a location other than the uterus, such as a fallopian tube. This type of pregnancy isn’t viable and cannot result in a live birth.

If it’s left untreated, this condition is very dangerous. You will always need medical intervention, and abortion isn’t necessary.
