How Would I Know If I Have an Ectopic Pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants in a location other than the uterus, such as the cervix or a fallopian tube. This type of pregnancy cannot survive, and without treatment, it can lead to life-threatening complications.

Initially, you may not notice anything out of the ordinary. You could have typical pregnancy symptoms, and you’ll still receive a positive pregnancy test.

However, as the egg grows, you could notice the following warning signs:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Light vaginal bleeding
  • Urge to have a bowel movement
  • Shoulder pain

Your fallopian tube may rupture if the fertilized egg implants there. If this occurs, you could feel the following:

  • Heavy bleeding inside the abdomen
  • Extreme lightheadedness
  • Fainting
  • Shock

How is This Condition Detected and Treated?

A provider can detect an ectopic pregnancy with an ultrasound and blood tests. Though there’s no way to prevent an ectopic pregnancy, certain risk factors, including smoking and IVF treatments, can increase your risk.

Several treatments are available, including medication and surgery. Your medical provider will determine which option is best for your situation.

While many women can have a healthy pregnancy after an ectopic pregnancy, you may grieve this loss and need additional support. Remember, this is not your fault; allow yourself to process your feelings.
